EMDR therapy
EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach. It is based on the assumption that our nervous system has the natural ability to handle challenging situations. However, when a situation is overwhelming, the memory of the situation is stored in different structures of the brain, and stimuli reminiscent of that memory can trigger feelings of anxiety, depression, physical tension and other symptoms associated with reactions to danger. EMDR using bilateral stimulation helps to store memories in a functional way and restore the nervous system's natural self-healing ability.Oproti klasické "mluvicí terapii" je práce EMDR rychlejší, strukturovanejší a dynamičtější.
How does EMDR therapy work?
When we experience a challenging situation, our brain has several mechanisms to process it naturally. One of these is processing in a sleep phase called REM (rapid eye movement). If these mechanisms are not sufficient, the memory of the situation is not stored functionally and that memory is subject to triggers (triggers) - it is repeatedly activated unconsciously (flashback) and produces experiencing, thinking and acting based on that past experience. In EMDR, using bilateral stimulation, we mimic the REM sleep stage, which is responsible for consolidating memories and storing them functionally. At the same time, there is a safe reliving of the distressing event that allows the nervous system to recognize that it is a memory. It is not uncommon in processing to experience a reparative scenario.
Jak terapie EMDR probíhá?
EMDR work is done in several steps. In the first step, by talking about what is bothering you, we get to understand the main problems and their roots. We gather information about how current problems may be related to past experiences. This phase can take one session but can also take several months, depending on what information is available and what capacity there is to connect it.
The second step - working with resources - involves supporting your inner resources by exploring how you may support yourself when you get upset. It may include imaginative techniques with stimulation or bodywork such as breathing exercises or nervous system stimulation.
The third step is the actual processing of memories using bilateral stimulation. Through the protocol-based definition of the memory, contact with the traumatic neural network is induced and the memories are processed and stored in a functional manner using bilateral stimulation. Each memory or aspect of a memory is handled separately.
